William Haseltine, Ph.D., Joins OneWorld Health Board of Directors.
Recognized worldwide for his work to facilitate better understanding of diseases such as HIV/AIDS and cancer, he is the founder of Human Genome Sciences, Inc. and served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer from 1993 to Oct. 2004.

In the early 1980s, Dr. Haseltine conducted some of the first research on AIDS, and lobbied and raised funds for a disease many did not want to associate with at that time. He has demonstrated a commitment to social responsibility throughout his career, including his recent work in public service for organizations dedicated to a variety of issues ranging from world economic growth to technology and public policy to creating a national health museum in Washington, D.C. Shadow Epidemic: The Growing Menace of Drug Resistance.
Alliance for the Prudent Use of Antibiotics (APUA), Nov. 8, 2004.  Shadow Epidemic — the 2005 GAARD Report — for the first time, provides a uniquely comprehensive view of drug resistance patterns across the major infectious diseases. The document focuses on the most troubling and urgent infectious disease threats whose cures are imperiled by antimicrobial resistance: HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, gonorrhea, pneumonia, and hospital associated infections.  APUA formed the Global Advisory on Antibiotic Resistance Data (GAARD) project in an effort to support and learn from the existing surveillance infrastructure, bringing together the world's largest surveillance systems . Winter 2005

The tragic consequences of the tsunami in South Asia have riveted the world’s attention, generating a tremendous compassionate response to the immediate needs of the region. The disaster also provides an opportunity to educate people in the west about the everyday disasters in poor regions of the world: diseases such as diarrhea and malaria.

Looking toward the future, the long-term goal for relief efforts should not be to restore people to their previous level of poverty. We need to create real change in health, the kind that heals and strengthens individuals, villages, communities, and eventually, economies and nations.

Addressing global health inequities occurs very slowly. In the past year, OneWorld Health achieved a number of successes, both clinical and organizational, underscoring that a new model for drug development is not only viable, but can thrive. In our fourth year as a nonprofit pharmaceutical company, these are our major accomplishments:
  • With funds from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and partners UC Berkeley and Amyris Biotechnologies, we launched a $42.6 million program to use synthetic biology to develop a sustainable and affordable new source of artemisinin-based antimalarials.
  • Completion of the largest-ever Phase III clinical trial for visceral leishmaniasis
  • Initial funding to enable a partner, Sanaria, Inc., to evolve the production methods for a novel vaccine for malaria.
We expanded our donor base to include contributions from philanthropic organizations such as the Chiron Foundation, Stanley Thomas Johnson Foundation, Sapling Foundation, and hundreds of individuals from all over the globe. We thank them – and each of you – for your unwavering, continued support.

As we approach our fifth year of operation, I look forward to reaching milestones such as bringing our first new drug to market in India, which is paramomycin for kala-azar; new drug development for pediatric diarrhea; and advances in synthetic biology leading to a fermentation source for antimalarials.

In the coming year will engage a number of pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies to join us in our mission to develop safe, effective, affordable, new drugs for people in the developing world. As a small company, our impact is limited. We need industry’s professionals, their manufacturing and distribution know-how, and most of all, their shared commitment to truly impact global health inequities.

Thank you for believing in us.

Sincerely,

Victoria G. Hale, Ph.D.
CEO and Founder

Number 100: An inspired couple makes a life’s commitment
We were delighted in recent months as so many new friends chose to contribute and we find ourselves humbled by the generosity of people around the world who lend their support, large and small, to our global health efforts. Below is an excerpt of one couple’s letter that inspired us as much as OneWorld Health has inspired them:

Attention Victoria Hale:

I have been a subscriber to Newsweek Magazine for about 5 years, and find it to be mostly ho-hum. Then I read the absolutely eye-popping article about what you and your husband are attempting to accomplish. It is not an idea who’s (sic) time has come: It is an absolutely great idea, and one of the most original, needed, and selfless thoughts of our time. Congratulations!

At present, I donate two times per year each to 99 worthy causes. Not a lot of money: $10 each time, but I would be pleased if you would permit me to make your organization, number 100.

I can’t support you with a more generous offering ($10.00) but I made copies of the Newsweek article, and I’m giving them to all of our friends, neighbors, relatives, bridge club associates, and our Young at Heart Social club.

Personally, my wife and I are both 75 years of age, in relatively good health, and we both recognize what a boon your idea is to those so many humans that are less fortunate than we are.

Enclosed, please find my check in the amount of $10.00, the first of what I hope to continue, twice per year, for as long as I live!
