On Wednesday, Nov 15, 2006 the Institute for OneWorld Health will be hosting a symposium titled Getting In-Zinc: A discussion of zinc supplementation to combat diarrheal and other infectious diseases moderated by Susan Wilson, PhD of the Institute for OneWorld Health. Later that day we will be hosting a second symposium titled Three complementary approaches to meet the challenges of the artemisinin supply chain moderated by Thomas Brewer, MD, FACP of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. On Wednesday, Nov 15, 2006 the Institute for OneWorld Health will be hosting a symposium titled Getting In-Zinc: A discussion of zinc supplementation to combat diarrheal and other infectious diseases with Panelists W. Abdullah Brooks of ICDDR,B, Henry Binder of Yale University School of Medicine, Shinjini Bhatnagar of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, and Peter John Winch from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The symposium will be moderated by Susan Wilson of the Institute for OneWorld Health. Zinc supplementation is a powerful therapeutic tool in managing a long list of illnesses, including infectious diseases such as pneumonia, diarrhea and malaria. This symposium will bring together researchers and clinicians to discuss the use of zinc in regions throughout the world and its effects on the clinical course of infectious diseases. The experts will also address the use of zinc in conjunction with therapies such as ORS, and how these tools can be successful on a global level. Later that day we will be hosting a second symposium titled three complementary approaches to meet the challenges of the artemisinin supply chain with panelists: J. Carl Craft from Medicines for Malaria Venture, Dianna Bowles of the University of York and Victoria Hale from the Institute for OneWorld Health. The panel will be moderated by Thomas Brewer of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and will To address the challenges of artemisinin derivatives manufacturing and supply, many different and complementary approaches are being pursued. The Medicines for Malaria Venture, the University of York/Center for Novel Agricultural Products consortium and the Institute for OneWorld Health will present their unique strategies and will discuss the forecasted impact of their approaches within the context of the global fight against malaria.
