Director, Research Administration and Acting Director, Clinical Sciences Division ICDDR,B, Dhaka, Bangladesh

Dr. Mohammed Abdus Salam, a Bangladeshi national, joined ICDDR,B on 13 October 1981 as a Medical Officer of the Dhaka Hospital of ICDDR,B. After serving as Chief Physician of the Dhaka Hospital of ICDDR,B from 1986 to 2001. After serving as Interim Director of Clinical Sciences Division of ICDDR,B from 2001-2003, he became the regular director of the division on 01 July 2003. On 15 May 2011, he has been assigned to the position of Director, Research Administration, ICDDR,B, and, in addition, continuing his role as Acting Director, CSD.

Dr. Salam graduated from Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka, Bangladesh in 1976. After one-year internship training, he received training in paediatric medicine and surgery at Dhaka Children’s Hospital for about two years. After serving the Dhaka Hospital of ICDDR,B for six months, he served at the Sebha Army Hospital, Sebha, Libya for about two years, before rejoining ICDDR,B in 1981.

Dr. Salam has developed his expertise in clinical trials. He has published over 100 original articles and review papers, two book chapter as a co-author, and several special articles. He served as invited speaker in many international workshops and conferences.

Dr. Salam has associated with various committees of ICDDR,B. He chaired the Occupational and Environment Safety Committee for a couple of years, and the Pharmacy Committee for long 14 years. He is a member of the Research Review Committee and served the Ethical Review Committee of ICDDR,B for nearly 15 years. He is a life-member of the Bangladesh Medical Association and is a member of ASM.

Dr. Salam is a regular faculty of the Technical Training Unit (TTU) of ICDDR,B, both for case management and research methodology courses for nationals and international trainees, and for staff of national NGOs, including serving as a faculty of the WHO organised workshops.

He had provided consultancies for training programme in Nepal, for control and management of cholera in Ecuador and Peru (for USAID), and was the lead clinician of the ICDDR,B’s team in Goma, 1994.

Dr. Salam has also served as member in various expert/technical committees including that for WHO, European Union, CHNRI, and SEARO. He is a regular reviewer of several peer-reviewed international journals.

He is a member of the Diarrhoea Technical Advisory Committee (D-TAC) and Diarrhoea Strategic Advisory Board (D-SAB) of the non-profit pharmaceutical - OneWorld Health (OWH).
